Calculating doses for children based on weight

Hi all,

Is it ever appropriate to use predicted weight (at back of BNF) for a child to calculate whether the dose on the px is correct or should we always wait for parent to disclose actual weight of the patient?

Many thanks!

Getting information through parents may lead to bias. It's better to assess body weight or measure the body surface area of the child and set dosing. Crowlings Rule is the safe and accurate technique for paediatric dosage calculation.

If the patient weight is unknown, you can calculate based on the age of the child, e.g "Young Rule"

Age in years / age + 12 × Adult dose
There are many formulas are also used to calculate paediatric dosage that you can find it below;
