Qualified as a pharmacist outside of the European Economic Area (EEA), or are a non-EEA national with an EEA pharmacist qualification (other than a UK- recognised pharmacist qualification)

See the International registration information pack (Refer doc.1) to find out more about it. Before you can apply to register as a pharmacist with the GPhC through this route, you must complete:

  • An Overseas Pharmacists Assessment Programme (OSPAP)
  • 52 weeks of pre-registration training in England, Scotland or Wales signed off as satisfactory by your tutor
  • The GPhC registration assessment with a pass result

Meeting these criteria does not necessarily mean you will gain entry to the UK or find employment.

Before you start the qualifying process you should carefully consider information provided by the UK Borders Agency (UKBA) to see whether you will be able to get the necessary visas and work permits. Unfortunately we are not able to answer questions about these issues.

Overseas Pharmacists' Assessment Programme (OSPAP)

This is a postgraduate diploma that is undertaken as the first part of the route to registration required by those who have qualified as a pharmacist from outside of the EEA.

The OSPAP is a one-year course designed to ensure that those who have qualified overseas receive the appropriate education and training to prepare them for UK practice and entry to pre-registration training.

Entry requirements

The OSPAP course is available to those who hold a pharmacy qualification gained overseas and are registered, or eligible to register, as pharmacists in their country of qualification.

For further information on the route to registration for pharmacists who have qualified overseas, please see Overseas (non-EEA) qualified pharmacists.

Accredited OSPAP courses

The UK universities currently accredited by the GPhC to offer an overseas pharmacists' assessment programme (OSPAP) are listed below.Providers of GPhC-accredited OSPAP courses

• Aston University
• University of Brighton
• University of Hertfordshire
• Kingston University London
• University of Sunderland

Pre-registration training placement

We believe professional practice offers the best protection for patients and people who use pharmacy services.

The pre-registration training placement gives trainees the opportunity to develop and demonstrate the skills, knowledge and behaviours they need to practice to the standards expected of a pharmacist. It also gives them the opportunity to apply their academic knowledge in real-life situations.

During their placement at a GPhC approved training site, trainees work under the guidance and supervision of a GPhC approved tutor, and must demonstrate over 52 weeks that they meet all of the performance standards set out in the pre-registration manual.

Trainees are responsible for finding their own training placement and tutor, and letting us know the arrangements they have made by applying for entry to the pre-registration scheme.

Assessment of application to make sure that they are eligible to start training and that the arrangements they have made are suitable and will provide them with the opportunity to meet the performance standards.

Registration assessment

The registration assessment is one of the ways we test that pre-registration trainee pharmacists can demonstrate that they understand how to apply knowledge appropriately and in a timely way, to make professional judgements in pharmacy practice. It also tests trainees’ number sense and that they are able to perform the calculations necessary to practice as a pharmacist.

The assessment of these skills to provide assurance to patients and the public that the pharmacy professionals on our register can practice safely and effectively. Passing the registration assessment is one of the criteria that trainees need to meet to be eligible to apply to become a registered pharmacist.

There are usually two registration assessments per year, in June and September. Candidates have three attempts to pass the entire assessment in one sitting, and must answer two question papers. The assessment is carried out simultaneously in locations across Great Britain.

Why do we carry out a registration assessment?

Applying to sit the registration assessment

We have now published the list of items you are permitted to keep on your desk during the registration assessment. (Refer doc.2) If you plan to sit the registration assessment in 2019 and want to keep any other items on your desk during the sitting, you must tell us why you need them by submitting an adjustment request.
