In recent developments regarding the Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test (GPAT) examination and the disbursement of GPAT scholarships, several significant changes have been implemented. Here's a comprehensive overview of the recent updates and guidelines to help you stay informed and prepared for the upcoming events.

Transition in Examination Conduct:

Since its inception in 2010, the GPAT examination has served as a crucial national-level entrance test for aspiring candidates seeking admission to the Master of Pharmacy (M. Pharm) program. Initially conducted by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the responsibility for conducting the examination transitioned to the National Testing Agency (NTA) in 2019, under the directives of the Ministry of Education, Government of India.

Judicial Directive and Governance Framework:

Notably, a landmark judgment by the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India on March 5, 2020, marked a pivotal moment in the governance structure of pharmacy education. The judgment delineated that the 'AICTE Act' would be amended to exclude pharmacy from its mandate, thereby placing pharmacy education under the purview of the Pharmacy Act, 1948. Consequently, the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) emerged as the supreme governing body for pharmacy institutions nationwide.

Initiative by Pharmacy Council of India:

Building upon this legal framework and regulatory shift, the Pharmacy Council of India has undertaken the responsibility for conducting the GPAT examination and administering scholarships to qualified candidates. Starting from the year 2024, this initiative aims to streamline the examination process and ensure efficient scholarship disbursement.

Key Information for Candidates:

The GPAT examination for the academic year 2024-2025 is tentatively scheduled to be held on 8th June 2024.

The examination will be conducted by the National Board of Examination in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) on behalf of the Pharmacy Council of India.

Scholarship disbursement for GPAT qualified candidates from the academic year 2023-24 onwards will be facilitated by the Council. The specific procedure for disbursement will be communicated in due course.

Candidates are encouraged to visit the NBEMS website (https://natboard.edu.in) for detailed information, including the examination bulletin, application form, and other relevant updates.
