Although there isn't a way to prevent gestational hypertension, you can do everything in your power to keep yourself and your baby as healthy as possible throughout your pregnancy. Healthy lifestyle choices can help control your blood pressure. And if you work closely with your doctor, you may help catch any problems early. That gives you the best chance for a healthy outcome.
Some ways you can help prevent gestational hypertension include the following:
Use salt as needed for taste.
Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day.
Increase the amount of protein you take in, and decrease the number of fried foods and junk food you eat.
Get enough rest.
Exercise regularly.
Elevate your feet several times during the day.
Avoid drinking alcohol.
Avoid beverages containing caffeine.
Your doctor may suggest you take the prescribed medicine and additional supplements.
In most cases there is no harm to you and your baby but pregnancy induced hypertension can cause complications like :
Placental abruption. This is when the placenta pulls away from the uterus too early.
Poor fetal growth (intrauterine growth restriction)
Stillbirth
Seizures (eclampsia)
Death of the mother and baby
