what is the mechanism behind cancer? how cancer cells formed?

My father in law suffering with lung cancer for past 2 weeks and he is a non-smoker, so I need to know the mechanism behind cancer and how cancer cells are formed.

In our human body, cells get dividing and replace the dead cells in our body. this happens in a balanced way , if this process fails and our body fails to correct the problem which lead to imbalance between the newly producing cell and dead cell, that may leads to formation of cancer. this formed cancer cells may remain in one place or travel to other places in our body and start to form new tumors.
