The 104th central council meeting of the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) has elected Dr B Suresh as the president of the PCI for the fourth consecutive term. This is the first time an election for the post of PCI president was held through ballot and the competition was between a vice-chancellor and a pro-vice chancellor.

The opposite candidate was Dr. P Yeole, who is the pro-vice-chancellor of Nagpur University in Maharashtra. Dr. Suresh is the vice-chancellor of the JSS Deemed University in Mysore.

Out of the 77 central council members, 64 members participated in the election. The central council meeting and the presidential election were held in the PCI office in New Delhi on August 7. Sources from PCI informed Pharmabiz that 48 members voted in support of Dr. Suresh while 16 members polled for Dr.Yeole.

Dr. Suresh became the president of the central council for the first time in 2003. He is the first academician elected to the post of PCI president when he was acting as the president of the Tamil Nadu State Pharmacy Council in 2003. Later, in 2008 and in 2013 he was unanimously elected to the top post.

It was during his tenure as president that the Pharmacy Practice Regulations (PPR) 2015 were notified by the PCI. Recently the union health minister, Dr J P Nadda referred to it in Parliament while replying to a question on Pharm D course. Similarly, Dr Suresh was instrumental in launching the international pharmacy education program, Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm D) in India.

The committee under him constructed a new building for the PCI in Noida near Delhi which is yet to be inaugurated.
