So, As far as we have the following options to do our higher studies after PharmD.
1.PharmD + PhD
2.PharmD + Residency Programs
3.PharmD+ MS ( Outside India)
Which one is best ? Whats the scope of MS programs after PharmD?
Dear all ,
I am pharm.d graduate ( Regular, 2k8 batch) working as Drug safety associate in Johnson and johnson, USA.
I have done my master in health care administration in MSU, Missouri. I have few points to share with you guys regarding higher studies after pharm.d in USA (only) . I dont have much idea about PhD programs here. but, if you want to pursue masters after pharm.d in USA , i would suggest you to choose the course and university wisely. Recently few universities have lost their accreditation and few international students from those universities are facing problems now ( some of them didn't get STEM extension, for some of them their hard earned degrees are invalid now). So, its safe to join state universities which are recognized and affordable rather than joining private universities(
In most of the private universities you will get the admission easily but they collect higher fee which is approximately 2- 3 times that of state universities as per my knowledge). I find many Pharm.d's come here for MHA, MPH, Regulatory affairs, Health informatics and few other courses. You should keep in mind that along with your interest, the chances of getting a job after your masters also matters. Few of you guys must have already heard about new administration, foreign policies, unpredictable fluctuations in the market( job openings) and issues related to work visa (H1B). I would suggest you to go for STEM courses ( you get 3 years (1+2)of OPT for STEM where as for non-STEM you get 1 year OPT) if you want to work here for a while after completion of your masters. To conclude finish your masters, get a job, apply for H1 (make sure that your employer sponsors H1 for you ) .
When it comes to residency programs, I got a chance to speak with chief clinical pharmacists of few reputed hospitals during the course of my masters program and i was told that they offer residency program for foreign students but the evaluation part , application process will be little complex.(Note: it will be costly) ( It will be nice if you can get the opportunity, work environment was very exciting). All the points that i have discussed are not to discourage anyone but i just want to share my thoughts. May be i can share few other things if the questions are more specific but for now i could only provide this info.
